There’s nothing quite like a long, hot shower to start or end the day, especially in the chilly and very unpredictable British weather. However, luxuriating in the shower for extended periods comes at a significant cost to both your water bill and the environment. The average showerhead dispenses around 9-10 litres of water per minute. Therefore, a 10-minute shower can consume a whopping 90-100 litres of water!

The problem worsens when we lose track of time amidst the comforting cascade of water. It’s easy to get lost in thought or indulge in a sing-along while the water continues to flow unabated. However, each additional minute in the shower adds to your water usage, contributing to unnecessary waste.

To combat this, consider setting a timer or using your favourite tune as a cue to limit your shower time. Opt for a water-saving showerhead to reduce water consumption without sacrificing water pressure. By being mindful of your showering habits, you can significantly decrease your water usage and contribute to conservation efforts.

2. Toilet Talk: Using the Toilet Like a Bin and Flushing Too Much

The toilet is not a catch-all for disposing of waste, yet many of us treat it as such, tossing everything from tissues to cotton pads into the bowl without a second thought. Each unnecessary flush wastes litres of water, needlessly draining this precious resource. Not to mention the havoc caused in drains when you flush an unflushable item!

Moreover, habitual flushing can become a reflexive action, leading to multiple flushes per use. Whether it’s out of habit or a desire for cleanliness, excessive flushing contributes to inflated water bills and environmental strain.

To curb this habit, adopt the mantra: “If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.” While it may sound unusual, this practice can significantly reduce water usage without compromising hygiene. Additionally, refrain from using the toilet as a rubbish bin. Dispose of non-flushable items in the appropriate bin to minimise unnecessary flushes and conserve water.

3.Tap Troubles: Letting the Taps on the Sink Run Too Long

Whether it’s washing dishes, brushing teeth, or rinsing fruits and vegetables, many of us have a tendency to let the tap run continuously while performing these tasks. What may seem like a minor inconvenience adds up to significant water wastage over time.

Leaving the tap running while washing dishes, for example, can consume up to 15 litres of water per minute. Similarly, allowing the tap to run while brushing your teeth can squander approximately 9 litres of water per minute. These seemingly small actions contribute to water scarcity and inflated utility bills.

To combat this, adopt mindful water usage practices. Turn off the tap when it’s not actively needed, such as while scrubbing dishes or applying toothpaste. Consider using a basin or plug to minimise water usage during tasks that require running water. By being conscious of your water usage habits, you can take meaningful steps towards conservation.

Reducing water consumption requires a concerted effort to break ingrained habits and adopt mindful practices. By addressing common culprits such as excessive showering, improper toilet usage, and wasteful tap habits, you can make a significant impact on water conservation efforts.
