Did you know that most gardening tools can be shared and re-used by others, even if they need simple repairs? Some waste recycling centres will even accept them for recycling. Sign in to find your local recycling waster centre.
Here are a few options as to what you can do with your old or unused tools…
Donate
If you feel that there is someone that could benefit from unwanted tools then get online and find a website that accepts donated tools. ‘The Tool Shed’ by The Conservation Foundation is a brilliant website to visit.
Alternatively you could donate to your local community, schools or other projects that could really use them. Or how about sending them far away? Workaid, the organisation that tackles poverty by providing disadvantaged people with the tools they need to learn a skilled trade and earn a living could be an option? Either way, you won’t be short for options.
Give away or sell
If you feel that your tools still has a resell value and could make way for a new ones, then eBay & Gumtree is always a great way to sell. Also, you could take the opportunity to box up other household items and take them to a good old car boot sale. Or, if you are feeling charitable then Freecycle and Freegle may give you the satisfaction of giving them away for free.
Try fixing them
Many of the items we tend to throw away can typically be repaired and quite cheaply too. Search the web, read blogs or watch step by step guides on YouTube. You could even ask for a helping hand and tackle the repairs with a friend or relative.
Recycle
If you are considering recycling your hand tools, remember gardening tools cannot be put in your recycling bin at home. Always check with your local council to see if they can accept your unwanted tools at the waste recycling centre.
Have you got some broken hand tools that can be repaired? Or do you know of a local project that is in need of tools? Why not tackle the garage this weekend to see if you can put good use to old unwanted tools. If you do, make sure you share it with us on Twitter or Facebook!
