BBQs, Beaches and Bins: How to Recycle Like a Pro This Summer

439

Summer in the UK means sizzling barbecues, coastal getaways, and long-awaited festivals. But while the sun (hopefully!) shines, it’s easy to forget that our fun can also generate a surprising amount of waste. From plastic cups to burger packaging, what we do with our rubbish matters – especially when we’re outdoors.

Recycling correctly during the summer doesn’t need to be a chore. With just a bit of awareness, you can keep your footprint light while still making the most of the season.

Here’s how to recycle like a pro during your favourite summer activities:

BBQs and Garden Gatherings

Ditch the Disposables (Or Choose Better Ones)
If you’re having a bbq, you should avoid single-use plastics when you can. Opt for reusable plates, cutlery, and glasses – or, if disposable is a must, choose compostable or recyclable options. And we shouldn’t need to remind you – disposable bbqs are a big no!

Set Up a Simple Sorting Station
Whilst having a garden party this summer, don’t forget to put out separate bins or labelled bags: one for recyclables, one for general waste, and one for food scraps (for composting, if you have a bin or local collection). Guests will follow your lead if it’s easy and it’ll help with the tidy up after!

Watch Out for Contaminated Packaging
If saucy burger boxes and greasy napkins are too messy, they can’t be recycled. Give containers a quick rinse if possible or bin them if they’re too far gone. It’s better to take the safer option, rather than contaminating a whole bin of recycling!

Beach Days and Picnic Spots

Pack In, Pack Out
If bins are full or not available, take your rubbish home with you. Leaving it “next to the bin” isn’t helpful – it can be scattered by wildlife or the wind and ends up polluting our coastline – destroying our beautiful beaches.

Bring a Waste-Free Picnic Kit
Reusable water bottles, beeswax wraps instead of cling film, and refillable containers can seriously cut down on waste. So, this summer when you’re packing up your picnic, be mindful.

Be Bottle Smart
Plastic bottles and cans are among the most littered items at UK beaches – but they’re easy to recycle! Crush them down, cap them, and take them home if there’s no recycling bin nearby.

Festivals and Outdoor Events

Bring Your Own Reusables
Many UK festivals now encourage reusable cups and water bottles. Take advantage of refill water stations and skip the single-use plastics!

Know What You Can Recycle On Site
Check festival guidelines – they often have dedicated recycling points. Follow their signage to avoid contamination.

Don’t Leave Your Tent
Thousands of tents are left behind every year at festivals. If it’s broken, recycle it responsibly (some companies collect them!). If not, take it home and use it again. Decathlon’s ‘No Tent Left Behind’ scheme is encouraging festival-goers to return their tents after use. So, this summer, make sure you’re not one of the many leaving tents dumped in the field.

Bonus Tips for UK Recycling Confidence

  • Check Local Rules: Councils across the UK differ slightly on what they accept in kerbside collections.
  • Avoid Wishcycling: If you’re not sure something can be recycled, check before you throw it in the bin. Wishcycling can cause more harm than good.
  • Educate Your Friends and Family: Share your knowledge! Most people want to recycle right – they just need a little guidance.

Enjoy Summer, Responsibly

Recycling might not be top of mind when you’re flipping burgers or dancing in a field, but it only takes a little planning to make a big difference. Whether you’re in the back garden or out exploring Britain’s beautiful beaches, remember: small actions add up.

Let’s make this summer not only fun, but a little bit greener too.
