As we shake off the winter stuffiness and spring clean our way into the brighter months, for March’s blog posts we’re looking at the choices we can make to support the natural world. This week, it’s inspired by bamboo.
This week, to mark the International Day of Forests on Saturday 21st March, we’re thinking about that marvel of the natural world. Not only do bamboo forests make fine locations for sword fights, its fast-growing, endlessly self-replenishing wood can be used as a sustainable replacement for polluting plastic.
Can we bring about a greener future by steering clear of plastic in favour of bamboo and other biodegradable materials?
Bamboo water bottle (£9.99)
There’s not a scrap of plastic in this sleekly designed water bottle. Light, durable and dishwasher-safe, this refillable bamboo number is made to biodegrade once the bottle wears out.
We like the generous dimensions and wide neck – no need to fiddle around with special brushes when you’re cleaning it out.

Bamboo, recycled fabric and recyclable aluminium bluetooth speaker (£79.99)
This portable Bluetooth speaker packs punchy sound and a long-lasting lithium ion battery within a very eco-friendly casing. Easy on the eye too!
At the front, a bevelled faceplate protects the speaker’s recyclable aluminium components. The rear of the speaker is upholstered in the House of Marley’s exclusive Rewind fabric, woven from a mix of 30% hemp fibre, 30% organic cotton and 40% fibres spun from recycled plastic bottles.

Bamboo watch (£18.98)
That this understated watch weighs less than 30 grams is down to the fact that the face and case are hand-crafted from lightweight, yet hard-wearing material.
We like the no-frills style, as well as the fact that if you were to remove and recycle the hands. Glass and quartz movement, the rest of the watch would be 100% biodegradable.
Bamboo lunch box (£14.99)
Smarter than your average lunchbox, we’re really digging the contrast between the natural grain of the lid and the solid block colour of the fibre base. The fabric strap holds your sandwiches securely inside when you’re on the move, while the silicone seal inside the lid is a practical choice for freshness.
And if you’re not sold on this chic lunch box yet, maybe you will be when you find out that the good people of BamBox make a donation to Friends of the Earth’s fight against plastic pollution with every sale.

Wireless bamboo keyboard (£29.95)
The bamboo in this solidly constructed – and rather charming – wireless keyboard has been responsibly harvested. Careful management of the harvest encourages new shoots to grow even bigger and stronger than previous generations of the plant.

Eco-friendly washing-up brush set (£18.95)
Fed up with being forced to throw out gross, gunged-up plastic sponges and scrubbers? How about investing in quality natural materials instead?
With sustainable bamboo handles and natural sisal and coconut fibre bristles, these plastic free brushes are both gentle on surfaces and effective at dislodging dirt and food residue.
Quick tip: Swipe any dirt off your mushrooms using a dry brush to avoid the sogginess that comes with washing them. It’s a game changer!

Who would have thought that bamboo has some great characteristics, which makes it great to make clothes with:
- It’s super soft. Bamboo is to cotton what cashmere is to wool, a more soft and luxurious feel.
- UV Protection. Bamboo fabric cuts out 97.5% of harmful UV rays, so perfect for holiday/travelling cover-ups.
- Kind to skin. For allergy prone skin, bamboo fabric is perfect. It’s anti-static and sits well next to your skin. No Irritation.
- Moisture managing. Bamboo fabric absorbs moisture away from your skin, keeping you drier.
- Thermo Control. Bamboo fabric is warm, yet it is also breathable.
